18/08/2008 - Rangel ready to deliver a fitness boost
Angel Rangel has delivered a massive boost to Roberto Martinez by declaring himself fit for Saturday's televised game at Plymouth Argyle.
The Spaniard made his first league appearance of the season in Saturday's 3-1 Championship victory over Nottingham Forest as he came off the bench for the last half-hour.
Having missed the opening defeat at Charlton Athletic due to a hernia operation in the summer, Rangel continued his return to full fitness following a similar outing in the Carling Cup victory over Brentford last Tuesday.
Replacing Matty Collins after an hour, Rangel looked solid at right-back along with providing support down the flanks with a couple of overlaps.
And he is raring to go as he looks to make his first start of the campaign as the Sky cameras roll into Home Park.
"It was great to be out there on Tuesday night against Brentford and also against Forest," said Rangel.
"I was a little disappointed to miss the Charlton game but I went there to support the players because we are a team and I want the club to do well. But I felt very good today. Obviously I have missed some pre-season games because of my operation, but I am happy with my fitness now.
"I feel ready to play in the next game against Plymouth."
After his latest outing, Rangel (pictured above) is expected to get the nod against Plymouth.
Matty Collins has come into the frame after impressing Roberto Martinez throughout the summer trips to Sweden and Spain, and has started both league matches.
There is also Alan Tate, who has yet to figure for the club in the Championship.
The former Manchester United apprentice wasn't named on the bench against Forest despite having been a regular feature in Swansea's defence since arriving in South Wales.
Considering the competition for places, Rangel admits he would not be too downhearted if he didn't start at Plymouth and insists he is happy to bide his time as he looks to earn a starting spot.
"We have a big squad here and everyone can play in the Championship," said Rangel. "There is very tough competition for the position I play.
"Matty Collins did well in Spain and Sweden and has started both league games.
"Alan Tate is also working very hard and is a good player, so I know what I have to do.
"I need to train hard all week and try to get my place back.
"Everyone wants to play but I will be ready if I am needed.
"Of course, I am disappointed if I don't start but I realise that we have a big squad.
"I have to wait for my chance and be patient.
"If I do not start at Plymouth then I will support my team-mates as much as I can."
